Deborah Burand is a professor of clinical law at NYU School of Law where she directs the International Transactions Clinic and is a Faculty Co-Director of the Grunin Center for Law and Social Entrepreneurship at NYU Law. In 2021, the Financial Times and the Impact and Sustainable Finance Faculty Consortium recognized Professor Burand and her colleague Professor Scott Taitel for their innovation and creativity in developing teaching materials for sustainable finance education.

She currently sits on the boards of the MicroBuild Fund, Calvert Impact Capital, and the Library of the Great Lakes (which she co-founded). She also is a co-founder of the Impact Investing Legal Working Group (IILWG) and Woman Advancing Microfinance International (WAM International).

Outside of academia, Professor Burand’s career has spanned in nearly equal parts– the private sector (global law firm), the nonprofit sector (microfinance and conservation organizations), and the public sector (US Federal Reserve Board, US Treasury Department, and the US government’s development finance institution – the DFC (then called OPIC) where she served as General Counsel).

She is a member of the Council on Foreign Relations and former International Affairs Fellow of the Council. She graduated from Georgetown University with a joint degree (JD/MSFS) combining law with a masters degree from the school of foreign service.
